What is Retrofit?

As the UK moves towards achieving its Net Zero targets, there is an increasing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings. This not only involves constructing new buildings with these attributes but also upgrading older constructions to improve their energy efficiency and
reduce carbon emissions. Many existing buildings were built before modern energy-saving techniques became available, making retrofitting a critical process. Retrofitting enhances the performance of existing buildings by making them more comfortable, energy-efficient, and sustainable. This can include incorporating new systems designed for high energy efficiency and low energy consumption. Examples of retrofit measures include adding loft or wall insulation, installing double or triple glazing, or replacing traditional gas boilers with ground- source or air-source heat pumps. Through retrofitting, we can significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of older buildings, contributing to a more sustainable future for us all.

Professional Retrofit roles in the Retrofit process

In order to carry out compliant Retrofit, several professional Retrofit roles have been introduced within the PAS2035 process, with clear responsibilities and accountabilities established to ensure that a quality ‘whole house’ Retrofit is delivered.

Retrofit Advisor: A person competent in delivering advice on measures to clients and householders.

Retrofit Assessor: A person qualified to carry out a Retrofit assessment on the existing property to ensure suitability for proposed measures, and supplying data to the Retrofit Coordinator.

Retrofit Coordinator: A person qualified as a specialist Retrofit project manager of the entire process, taking overall responsibility for all elements of the Retrofit process, sometimes also fulfilling the roles of the other areas as well.

Retrofit Designer: A person qualified to prepare a Retrofit design based on the determined project pathway. Designers sometimes require higher-level qualifications for more complex pathway projects.

Retrofit Installer: A person or organisation undertaking the energy efficiency measures in an existing building, in accordance with PAS2035.

Retrofit Evaluator: A person responsible for monitoring the installation once complete to ensure its continuing suitability and effectiveness.
